Cooper Lighting Solutions Commits to Canadian Acquisition

Cooper Lighting Solutions, part of the global Signify family, just made a noteworthy move by acquiring Calgary-based Nemalux, a company that has quietly built a reputation over the past two decades for making “tough-as-nails” LED lighting. Nemalux specializes in fixtures designed for the truly harsh places like oil rigs, mines, ships, and chemical plants. These are environments where the lights have to survive extremes and meet strict safety standards. Other segments include Chemical,  Water Treatment, Mining, Grain Processing, and pulp and paper. Their lights are built to hold up under extreme conditions while also providing illumination that supports worker safety and efficiency.

The company makes fixtures with different optics and mounting options, so they can be used in a variety of settings or for specific needs. This flexibility allows projects to choose lighting that fits the space or task at hand. Nemalux products are designed to be affordable at the outset and straightforward to install. Components can often be serviced or replaced as needed, which helps reduce ongoing maintenance costs. The company offers help with lighting design and technical support from their engineering team. They focus on how lighting will actually perform in real sites, not just the product itself. Lights and parts are stocked in Canada, and the company typically manufactures to order. As a result, orders can often be fulfilled within a short timeframe.

For anyone following the hazardous location lighting scene, it’s a niche market where a few brands like ABB’s Hazlux, Hubbell’s Killark, and Crouse-Hinds have traditionally owned the specifications but by bringing Nemalux under its roof, Cooper’s going to have answers for industrial customers who need ironclad products.

Interestingly, Nemalux wasn’t widely distributed before not showing up on many line cards in the Canadian market but now, with Cooper’s deep network, Nemalux is about to get much broader exposure—more customers, more markets, and, likely, more credibility.

Nemalux’ s journey started back in 2003, dreamed up by physicist Jode Himann, and it’s grown steadily, staying focused on the toughest jobs in lighting. They even expanded by acquiring CRS Electronics in 2018, shoring up expertise and engineering in the process. The company, under the leadership of Samuel Pogosian, will stay in Calgary, with its Canadian manufacturing humming along under the new ownership.

For Cooper, this is a nice way of re-establishing themselves in a specialty segment that stayed with Eaton after the Eaton Divesture. Whether this changes the balance in harsh and hazardous lighting markets is something to watch but Cooper just gave itself a shot at making a bigger impact in one of the Canadian electrical industry’s most demanding arenas.
