Proposed Amendments to Energy Efficiency Regulations Affect Electrical Products

Three proposed amendments to regulations under the federal Energy Efficiency Act, expected to be published in spring 2016, 2017 and 2018, will affect a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial electrical products, including lighting. The amendments prescribe new or updated standards for energy-using products, and update testing methodologies or labelling requirements. The goal is to improve energy efficiency standards for consumer and commercial products, align with U.S. requirements, and generate environmental benefits.

Amendment 13, to be published this spring, proposes to update existing energy efficiency standards for 20 product categories. For 19 product categories, standards will align with requirements in force or soon to be in force in the U.S.

Amendment 14 may add 15 additional product categories, to align with requirements in force or soon to be in force in the U.S., depending on Canadian market conditions. Amendment 15 would add another 18 product categories.
