Enercon And Hydro-Québec Enter Into New PartnershipHydro-Québec’s research institute (IREQ) and ENERCON Canada Inc. have initiated a new R&D partnership agreement on grid integration of wind power. The aim of the agreement is to advance understanding of the impact on grids of new electronic wind turbine control systems.

“We’re extremely proud of this strategic partnership and delighted to once more be conducting joint studies with Hydro-Québec, a power grid leader,” says Michael Weidemann, Executive Vice-President, Enercon Canada Inc. “Once again, we’re working with IREQ, a partner with which we share not only a long history, but ambitions to produce top-calibre studies. We’re also very pleased to be collaborating a doctoral project for the first time in Canada, building on our current collaborations with German universities.”

The partnership allies Enercon’s expertise in energy converters and Hydro-Québec’s know-how in grid simulation and operation. For over 10 years, IREQ has been simulating large-scale wind power grid integration, achieving global recognition for its competence and helping spur development of this energy stream in Québec.

Enercon, founded in Germany over 30 years ago, is a world leader in the design and sale of wind turbines. Recognized globally for its direct-drive energy converters, high manufacturing standards and long-term service agreements, the company, with its more than 20,000 employees, has become synonymous with reliability and performance. So far, Enercon has installed more than 26,100 wind turbines with power-generating capacity ranging from 500 kW to 7.5 MW, for a total exceeding 42.4 GW.

Enercon Canada Inc. has near 450 employees, with offices in Montreal, Toronto and Dartmouth, service outlets from coast to coast, a production plant in Matane, and a training centre and storage facility in Boucherville. Enercon Canada Inc. has installed wind turbines having a capacity of more than 2,000 MW in seven provinces and territories.

We are quickly approaching January 2021 and publication of the 5th edition of the CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety Standard. This is good news for Canada as we continue to evolve in our identification and management of the electrical hazards of arc flash and shock.

But as I have quoted in the past, we need to ensure we are getting it right, and there is still a lot of work to be done. Most of the focus has been on arc flash and I am concerned that the electric shock hazard has been neglected.

I was elated, thrilled beyond belief. In my wildest dreams I hadn’t thought I’d ever be so lucky. I stared at the paper in front of me, grinning from ear to ear. All of those beautiful shapes, connected together — it was art. My eyes ran to the bottom of the page, then up again to the top where they rested, immersed in what they beheld. I felt so happy, so powerful, almost god like. I couldn’t wait to get going.

But I’m getting ahead of myself, as I sometimes do. Sorry about that. Let me roll back time a bit for you. It’ll make the story easier to understand.
