Hydro One Power Theft Investigation Results in Employee Arrest

February 2, 2017

A Hydro One employee and a former contractor in the Timmins, Ontario area have been arrested and charged by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with theft of power. These individuals are alleged to have stolen power at business and residential addresses by installing meter bypass devices.

The OPP arrests were part of a Hydro One investigation that began on January 15. Hydro One alerted the OPP and has been working in tandem with them as the investigation progresses.

“Hydro One has zero tolerance for unethical and criminal behaviour. Upon receiving this information, a focused investigation was initiated. We intend to use the full powers of our investigative team to get to the bottom of this case and any other potential cases of power theft,” says Rick Haier, Chief Security Officer of Hydro One Inc.

Power theft is illegal, costly and dangerous to the public. Anyone who suspects theft is asked to call the Hydro One anonymous Tip Line 1-866-550-6477.
