December 14, 2017

Jean-François Nolet, vice-president of policy and communications at the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) issued this statement following the announcement made by British Columbia Premier John Horgan to complete construction of the Site C hydroelectric dam.

“The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) acknowledges the Government of British Columbia’s decision to complete Site C construction. The wind energy industry is looking forward to working with the Government of B.C, BC Hydro, first nations and communities to restore BC Hydro’s Standard Offer Program and to develop new procurement opportunities for the additional renewable electricity projects that will be needed over time for the province to meet its climate goals as it continues the clean electrification of its economy. B.C has a world-class wind resource that can help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, producing low-cost and clean electricity as well as attracting investment and creating jobs in the green industries of the future.”

Background

  • The recently released version of Lazard’s Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis, Version 11.0 shows that the cost of wind energy has declined 67 per cent over the past eight years and wind energy is one of the least expensive forms of power across all scenarios, including on an unsubsidized basis.
  • More wind energy has been built in Canada over the last decade than any other form of electricity generation, with installed capacity growing by an average of 18 per cent a year over the past five years.
