Jean-François Nolet, Vice President of the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) made the following statement following the release of the result of the Massachusetts call for tenders.

“The Canadian Wind Energy Association congratulates Hydro-Québec and its partner Eversource on the selection of the Northern Pass Transmission, Hydro project as part of the call for tenders to supply the state of Massachusetts with new clean energy.

Wind energy projects in Québec (1,900 megawatts) and the Maritime provinces (1,200 megawatts) have participated in this competitive process by offering competitive and innovative solutions, in collaboration with other technologies and transmission projects.

The result of this call for tenders is not the one expected for the wind industry in Quebec and Canada, but we must nevertheless highlight the potential and readiness for Canada’s wind industry to export climate solutions to the U.S. and remain confident that Canada’s wind energy can play a role when other opportunities arise in the Northeastern United States.

Wind energy remains the only source of electricity generation that has unconditional access to all environmental credits granted by the northeast states. In addition, it is currently the lowest cost form of energy that can be commissioned in Canada, as evidenced by the latest Alberta tendering, which resulted in an average energy cost of 0.037 $ / kWh.”
