Calgary-based Greengate Power Corporation is proposing to build a 400-megawatt solar project in nearby Vulcan County, reports Stephen Tipper in the Vulcan Advocate.

The $500-million project, to be built south of Lomond, Alberta, will be one of the largest solar projects in North America, Dan Tocher, Vice-Principal of Stakeholder Relations, told Vulcan Council in a recent meeting. Lomond is located in Vulcan County.

Greengate, a renewable and clean energy developer, expects to receive approval from Alberta Environment and Parks in Q1 2019. If the powerplant receives power plant and interconnection approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission in Q2 2019, construction could begin sometime next year and become operational in Q4 2020. The company has already secured leases on 4,700 acres of private land. (Shown in photo: Dan Tocher, left, with Vulcan County Council.)

Greengate has already developed Alberta’s two largest operating wind energy projects: the 150-megawatt Halkirk development and the 300-megawatt Blackspring Ridge, which is Canada’s largest operating wind energy project.
