ESA Welcomes Auditor General Report and Recommendations

December 10, 2020

The Electrical Safety Authority welcomes the published Auditor General’s 2020 Annual Report and will review the recommendations carefully to ensure appropriate actions are taken that will further strengthen ESA’s operations and enhance its effectiveness in ensuring electrical and public safety in Ontario.

“Public safety is our top priority and ESA looks forward to using the Auditor General’s recommendations to further our journey toward a modern and results-based regulator while reducing burden for businesses in Ontario,” said David Collie, President and CEO of ESA. “This work will align well with our new five-year corporate strategy, launched this year to accelerate our progress. We are proud that the Auditor General noted electrical safety in the province has improved over the last 10 years.”

ESA’s executive team is working on an action plan in collaboration and consultation with the Board of Directors, the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services and its many stakeholders.

ESA’s important work is being guided by a new corporate strategy released in April 2020 as well as the July 2020 launch of Risk-Based Oversight (RBO) for electrical inspections. RBO provides a means of improving safety and reducing regulatory burden while focusing on the areas of highest risk to public safety.
