During a virtual awards ceremony in Chile, the International Smart Grid Action Network, (ISGAN) awarded Saint John Energy the 2021 Award of Excellence for their Innovative Smart Energy Project.

This global recognition comes just weeks after Ryan Mitchell, Vice President and Chief Development officer of Saint John Energy was named one of Canada’s Clean50 leaders.

“The scope of this win cannot be understated,” explained National Electrical Trade Council (NETCO) Executive Director Melissa Young. “For a utility, the size of Saint John Energy to be recognized on the worldwide stage and to come out on top really shines a light on the fantastic work that is being done there,” said Young.

For the Seventh Annual ISGAN Award of Excellence competition, a wide range of smart grid project nominations were received. The winning projects were selected by an independent, international jury of smart grid experts, led by Mr. Reji Pillai Kumar, Executive Director of the Global Smart Energy Federation (GSEF). The jury selected the winning projects based on the following five criteria: potential impact, economic rationale, the potential for replication and adaptation, innovation, and other benefits.

The Saint John Energy Smart Grid will allow customers to be part of the future and the solution. Smart water heaters, thermostats and smart heat pumps will become part of the interconnected grid and will also allow the utility to curb peak demand for energy.

“NETCO continues to follow the success of Saint John Energy and looks forward to partnering with them on the road to net-zero 2050 and we would like to congratulate their entire team for this tremendous honour they have received,” said Young.
