New housing construction investment totalled $4.4 billion in May, up 4.1% from May 2016. This increase was mostly explained by higher investment in Ontario and, to a lesser extent, in British Columbia and Manitoba.
Construction costs for the electric utility distribution systems increased 0.1% in 2014 compared with the 2013 Electric Utility Construction Price Index. Higher costs for construction indirects (+4.9%), which include engineering (+5.0%), and administration and overheads (+4.8%), were tempered by lower costs for labour (-2.3%) and construction equipment (-0.9%).

Investment in non-residential building construction totalled $12.3 billion in the fourth quarter, down 0.7% from the previous quarter. This marks the seventh decrease in eight quarters. Nationally, the decline reflected lower spending on commercial and industrial building construction.
