IESO Awards 16 Contracts for Large Renewable Energy Projects in Ontario

March 12 2026

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has awarded 16 contracts under a competitive process for procuring large renewable energy projects greater than 500 kilowatts. The 16 contracts offered represent 454.885 megawatts (MW) of clean renewable energy capacity.

The results include:

  • -5 wind contracts totalling 299.5 MW, with a weighted average price of 8.59 cents/kWh
  • -7 solar contracts totalling 139.885 MW, with a weighted average price of 15.67 cents/kWh
  • -4 hydroelectric contracts totalling 15.5 MW, with a weighted average price of 17.59 cents/kWh

Of these, more than 80% or 13 projects (336.8 MW) include participation from one or more Aboriginal communities, including 5 with more than 50% Aboriginal participation.

Additionally, more than 75% of the successful proposals had received support from local municipalities, and more than 60% had support from abutting landowners.

The projects are located here:

  • Alfred and Plantagenet Township
  • Chatham Kent & Town of Lakeshore
  • Dutton Dunwich
  • Haldimand County
  • Municipality of The Nation and Township of Champlain
  • Oro-Medonte Township
  • North Stormont
  • Prince Edward County
  • Quinte West
  • Ryerson Township
  • Selwyn Township (in partnership with Trent Lakes)
  • Stone Mills Township
  • South Stormont Township (in partnership with Cornwall)

The competitive process introduced “strong competition among developers of large renewable projects, helping to drive down price and secure clean, reliable generation for the province,” says Bruce Campbell, President and CEO, IESO.
