Manitoba Hydro Confirms Worker Suffered Fatal Injury Near Gillam, Manitoba

An employee of a contractor working for Manitoba Hydro near the northern community of Gillam suffered a fatal injury early Wednesday. The worker was an employee of Forbes Brothers Ltd.

The name and age of the deceased is not being released. Family has been notified.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the workers’ family,” said Kelvin Shepherd, President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro. “This is a very sad and tragic incident. Counseling has been made available to all contractor and Manitoba Hydro employees who were on site at the time of the accident.”

Forbes Brothers is building the transmission line that will carry power from the under construction Keeyask Generating Station to the existing Radisson Converter Station just outside of Gillam. The accident took place at a marshaling yard located approximately 45 kilometres from Gillam, near the Limestone Generating Station on the lower Nelson River.

Representatives from Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health are investigating.
