How Electrical Contractors Can Embrace the Internet of Things

Results of a study of ways in which the electrical contracting industry can prepare for the new era of smart facilities made possible by IoT technologies and systems could serve as a comprehensive IoT roadmap for electrical contractors.

The study was commissioned by ELECTRI International – The Foundation for Electrical Construction. The goal: to develop short- and long-term strategies for the electrical contracting industry that will prepare it for the new era of smart facilities made possible by IoT technologies and systems.

The study included an online survey, which shows that members of the electrical contracting industry are increasingly recognizing the exciting technological advancements of the Internet of Things (IoT) and their impact on making buildings smarter and more efficient.

Among the strategies identified by the study:

    • transforming electrical contractors into master system integrators to expand their focus from electrical and power systems to holistic building system integration

    • demonstrating how lighting will be the gateway to make buildings smarter and more connected

    • providing services such as building system integration and performance monitoring
