SaskPower Rolling out Smart Meters for all Commercial and Industrial Customers

EIN SmartMeter 400

 August 20, 2020

All Saskatchewan businesses will soon experience the benefits of a smart meter free of charge. With more than 21,500 smart meters installed since 2017, SaskPower is ready to begin installing smart meters for remaining commercial and industrial customers.

Between September 2020 and December 2021, SaskPower will install approximately 27,000 more meters. Of those, most will go to small and medium businesses. An additional 3,200 farmers and 1,100 residential customers are eligible for the type of meter being installed. They will be offered a smart meter so they can begin to access the benefits. This will also provide SaskPower with more visibility into the power grid to begin improving outage response times.

“The smart meters we’re installing have been tested rigorously, have proven safe after four years in Saskatchewan’s toughest weather, and meet our own industry-leading standard for smart meters,” said Shawn Schmidt, Vice President of Distribution and Customer Services at SaskPower. “Meters we have installed have performed as expected, with no unacceptable failures.”

“Customers getting a smart meter will receive bills based on actual meter readings every month – no more estimates. They’ll also get access to detailed information that can help them reduce their power use,” said Schmidt.

SaskPower will contact all customers receiving a meter ahead of their installation by mail and phone. Customers may choose to decline a smart meter at that time.
