Skills Ontario Supports Government’s Ongoing Commitment to Encouraging More Ontarians into Skilled Trades & Tech

November 17, 2022

Skills Ontario welcomes continued support and funding for initiatives that enable more young people to pursue careers in skilled trades and technologies including a further increase to the Skills Development Fund and additional support for the School College Work Initiative (SCWI). The Fall Economic Statement also contained important changes to the Ontario Disability Support Program that will reduce barriers for those living on ODSP for pursuing careers.

“Skills Ontario will continue to partner with the Ontario Government, the Dual Credit program and all of our partners in industry, education and government to inspire more young people in Ontario to pursue in-demand careers in Skilled Trades & Technologies,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario.  “We are pleased to see that the Ontario Government is continuing to place strong focus on skilled trades and tech careers which will continue to show strong demand.”

The Fall Economic Statement released today by the Ministry of Finance includes an additional $40 million in funding for the Skills Development Fund to increase the number of Ontarians pursuing skilled trades in Ontario and $4.8 million in new funding for the Dual Credit Program that will provide for 400 new student spots in the tech stream and 400 new spaces in the apprenticeship stream.
