Ontario EV ChargeON Program Accepting Applications until January 31, 2024

The province is accepting applications for the EV ChargeON program to build publicly accessible charging stations in communities with less than 170,000 people, as well as in any Indigenous community in Ontario. Eligible applicants include businesses, not-for-profit corporations, municipalities, Indigenous businesses, organizations and communities, and broader public sector organizations like hospitals and universities.

The EV ChargeON program consists of two streams: the Community Sites Stream and the Government Sites Stream. Applications for the EV ChargeON Community Sites Stream, a competitive grant subsidy program, are now open for eligible private and public sector entities. Eligible applicants have until January 31, 2024, to submit their application.

EV ChargeON Eligibility

Eligible applicants, located and operating in Ontario, include:

  • Businesses
  • Not-for-profit corporations
  • Municipal governments
  • Indigenous communities, organizations or businesses
  • Broader public sector organizations

To apply, you must be the current owner of the site, or have written approval from the owner or Band Council, to install and operate the charging station for a minimum of 5 years.

EV charging station sites must:

  • Be publicly accessible 24/7
  • At minimum, include at least one of:
    • four Level 2 ports
    • one Level 3 port and one Level 2 port
    • two Level 3 ports
  • Include the following connector types:
    • Level 2 chargers: SAE J1772 standard connector
    • Level 3 chargers: Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors must represent a minimum of 25% of the connectors at a site; remaining connectors may include CCS, NACS, and/or CHAdeMO
  • Be located in a community with a population of 170,000 or less or in any Indigenous community in Ontario

Available funding

The funding available for each project depends on the type of applicant and type of charging technology you propose. The maximum amount of funding available per project is $1 million. Each site is considered 1 project.

The following parameters will determine how much provincial funding is available for each project:

Per-project percentage cap:

  • Municipalities and Indigenous businesses, organizations, and communities: Up to 75% of total project cost.
  • Other applicants: Up to 50% of total project cost.

Per-technology level cap:

  • Refer to below chart to identify the maximum dollar amount allowed for each charger type.
