Investment in Saint John Affordable Housing Project Under Construction

January 3, 2025

The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing more than $20 million in the creation of 56 affordable homes in Saint John.

The Steepleview Developments apartment building will have one- and two-bedroom units, as well as barrier-free units. Twenty-eight of them will receive rent supplements from the New Brunswick Housing Corporation.

The building, already under construction at 35 Cliff St., will also include a daycare and community rooms for residents.

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation is investing $2.2 million in the project while the Regional Development Corporation is adding $500,000. The federal government is contributing more than $18 million through its Affordable Housing Fund, and the City of Saint John is providing $260,000.

“More people than ever are choosing to settle in Atlantic Canada,” said federal Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc. “The investment announced through the Affordable Housing Fund today will help build more strong, diverse and resilient communities, where everyone has the opportunity to live in a home that meets their needs.”

LeBlanc spoke on behalf of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Sean Fraser.

Further contributions to the project were made by the Diocese of Saint John and the Knights of Columbus.

“The City of Saint John remains committed to collaborating with all levels of government and community partners to address the pressing issue of affordable housing,” said Mayor Donna Reardon. “The inclusion of affordable units within the Steepleview development exemplifies these shared values and efforts. We are delighted with the significant investments announced today.”

The project is expected to be completed by next fall.
