LED Streetlights Thorold

 

With the help of a subsidy from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), the City of Thorold in southern Ontario will invest $838,000 in converting its street lighting to LEDs.

According to a report in Niagara This Week, powering the city’s 2,000 sodium vapour streetlights costs $240,000 annually, not including $50,000 in maintenance fees. Switching to LEDs is expected to cut consumption by 60% and maintenance costs by 80%. If the work is completed by the end of 2015, the city could receive a $193,000 rebate from OPA.

The neighbouring communities of Niagara, St. Catharines, Grimsby, Niagara Falls, Port Colborne, Pelham, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie have already made or are making the transition to LED lights.
