Saskatchewan Energy: 50% Renewable by 2030

Sask Renewable Energy

By 2030, half of Saskatchewan’s power will come from renewable wind, solar and geothermal energy, Premier Brad Wall announced in the provincial legislature last week. As reported by Emma Graney in the Regina Leader-Post, Wall later told reporters the 50% target is “achievable, and that’s what we’re going to be moving toward.” At present, about a quarter of the province’s power comes from renewables, mostly wind and hydro. Much of the increased green production is expected to come from solar power generation.

SaskPower was scheduled to make the announcement yesterday, but Wall announced the target in response to questions from the NDP about the government’s commitment to green energy.

Wall said the mix of renewables in SaskPower’s generation structure “can be much greater, we want it to be greater and we need it to be greater because… we have high emissions in this province.”
