Horizon Utilities Completes $2.9 million Upgrade of St. Catharines Electricity System

Horizon Upgrade

December 17, 2015

The investments are part of a $30 million budget for capital projects in 2015, including $16.5 million earmarked for system renewal efforts. This project, replacing an old 4 kV system, with new, higher voltage 13.8 kV capacity, includes over 27 kilometres of new overhead wires supported by 160 new poles and 58 new transformers.

Several assets throughout Horizon Utilities’ system in St. Catharines are facing significant pressures due to increased customer demand and a growing number of system components nearing or at end of life that require replacement. This project runs along the area bounded by Church Street, King Street, Page Street, Queenston Street and Davidson Street, as well as Grantham Avenue between Scott Street and Carlton Avenue.
