LED Streetlights Brightening Calgary’s Downtown

LED Streetlights Brightening Calgary’s Downtown

An LED streetlight conversation program already underway in Calgary, Alberta is expected to save the city $6 million annually in maintenance costs.

Once the program is complete, over 80,000 LED lights will have been installed, reducing energy consumption by half. That’s the equivalent of taking over 5,500 vehicles off the road.

The city has already converted over 30,000 streetlights with LEDs from Current, powered by GE. Another 50,000 will be converted within the next four years.

The remaining 10,000 do not qualify for replacement because they are decorative and an LED equivalent may not be available that is economical to the project.

Roads Director Troy McLeod encourages Calgarians to look for the new lights in their neighbourhoods. “Our new LED lights have made a significant difference in nighttime visibility, and these lights will save Calgarians money in both electricity consumption and lifecycle maintenance.”

To minimize the potential impact on health, the LED technology used in residential areas will project a warmer light, minimizing exposure to blue light.
