BC’s Site C Hydroelectric Project Surpasses 2,000 Workers

March 24, 2017

January employment statistics from BC Hydro indicate 2,124 total workers on the Site C project, with 1,719 workers from British Columbia (81%). Among the workers were 195 Aboriginals, 257 women and 42 apprentices working for construction and non-construction contractors.

The BC Chamber worked alongside local chambers in the northeast region to facilitate workshops connecting BC Hydro with local businesses and expertise, explains Val Litwin, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “We’re encouraged that the Site C Clean Energy Project will continue to create opportunities for local skilled workers,” she says.

The turbines and generators contractor, Voith Hydro, will mobilize to the dam site in spring of this year. BC Hydro expects to award the generating station and spillways civil works contract later this year.

When the project is complete in 2024, BC Hydro says it will produce enough energy to power the equivalent of about 450,000 homes per year.
