Celebrating Canada’s Latest Clean50 Honourees

The Canada’s Clean50 Honour is awarded every September to 50 individual leaders and small teams who have contributed the most to enhancing sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada over the prior two years.

Winners are chosen from over 500 nominees spanning 16 distinct categories: Advocacy & ENGOs, Angels & Investors, Cities, Building, Clean Tech, Consultants, Education, Financial & Services, Manufacturing & Transportation, Primary Resources, Public Sector, R&D, Renewable and Traditional Energy Generation, Retail & Consumer, Technology & Telecom.

Among this year’s honourees are the following…

Clean50Honourees

• Traditional energy —Brian Bentz, President and CEO, PowerStream. PowerStream is one of the first utilities of its size in North America to initiate a proof-of-concept trial of a micro grid demonstration project that includes solar, wind and natural gas generation sources, three different battery storage technologies, and a micro grid control system.

• Clean Technology
o CircuitMeter Team members Paul Mertes, Dan Seto and Michael Ordanis. CircuitMeter is an easy add-on to any electrical panel that can accurately measure electrical consumption circuit by circuit, right down to measuring even the consumption of a computer mouse.

o Clear Blue Team members Miriam Tuerk, Mark Windrim and John Tuerk. Clear Blue Technologies is making off-grid solar and wind powered systems including streetlights, emergency power and security cameras highly reliable, easy to install and maintain, and controllable and serviceable over the Internet.

• Renewable energy generation
o Stephen Cheeseman, President & CEO, Chinook Power.The $415 million investment in the Quality Wind Farm that Cheeseman drove provided for approximately 100 person years of construction work to local and First Nations businesses, 8 full time jobs and an alternative/sustainable business for a single industry town in northern BC. More importantly, the project delivers 142 MW and is BC’s largest energy producing wind farm providing clean electricity to approximately 45,000 homes annually.
o MajidBahrami, Canada Research Chair in Alternative Energy Conversion Systems, Associate Professor, Simon Fraser University. Dr. Bahrami established the unique, world-class Laboratory for Alternative Energy Conversion for sustainable systems. Through collaboration with industry, he has developed innovative “clean” solutions ranging from passive cooling systems for telecom (15% C-footprint reduction) to adsorption cooling systems, using waste heat, and eliminating harmful refrigerants.

• Emerging leaders
o Eric Chisholm, Technical Lead, WSP Canada. At WSP, Chisholm helped develop and now leads his sustainability team’s energy services consulting practice, assisting real estate leaders to take the necessary steps towards a sustainable climate-positive future. Since 2010, the group has identified technical energy conservation measures at buildings across Canada totalling the equivalent of over 250 million kilowatt hours and $20 million annually in utility bill savings, and $300 million in property valuation benefit.
o Daniel Dicaire, Energy and Sustainability Officer, Ottawa Community Housing. Dicaire has driven various programs, including $3.5 million of solar installations, $5 million of water retrofits (reducing consumption by 40%), insulation in over 700 units, and a portfolio-wide LED Lighting conversion project. These projects reduce OCH’s ecological footprint and are generating over $5.5M annually in savings and revenues.

The Clean50 Awards were founded by Delta Management Group in June 2011. Delta Management Group, formed in 1992, is a boutique search firm with the leading practice in “green collar”/“green professionals” search in Canada, including clean tech, corporate social responsibility and sustainability professionals.
