The Standards Council of Canada is delighted to announce that Shawn Paulsen, manager of conformity assessment with CSA Group, was recently appointed by the Canadian National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (CANC/IEC) as their new vice-president.

In addition to this role on CANC/IEC, Mr. Paulsen is also completing his first term as IEC vice-president and chair of the IEC’s Conformity Assessment Board (CAB). He has a wealth of knowledge in both technical and policy standards work, having been involved with a number of Canadian and international activities.

Mr. Paulsen also has substantial experience with conformity assessment activities. Prior to becoming chair of the IEC CAB, he served for six years as a voting member. He is knowledgeable about the IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE), having been the Canadian member body to the IECEE’s secretary and a member on many working groups.

Further to being a member of many regulatory advisory councils in Canada and the United States, he is also involved with a number of Canadian National IEC committees including: IEC Technical Committee 64 – Building electrical safety, CSA/CEC Part 1 Canadian Electrical Code, CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements on Electrical Safety, Canadian Advisory Council on Electrical Safety, and is past international president of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

SCC is Canada’s member body to IEC and represent Canada’s voice on standards-related matters at an international level. CANC/IEC is responsible for providing strategic advice on Canada’s participation in IEC. It safeguards Canadian interests, and identifies priorities and emerging issues in the electrotechnical sector. Through CANC/IEC, Canadian stakeholders participate in IEC standards development and conformity assessment activities.
