No Time to Wait: New Campaign From BC’s Construction Industry Urges Provincial Government to Take Immediate Action for Payment Certainty

March 3, 2025

Lack of payment certainty is one of the most significant issues in British Columbia’s construction sector. When contractors don’t get paid on time, it doesn’t just hurt businesses — it costs taxpayers billions annually and blocks cash flow in the economy. The BC Construction Association (BCCA) has launched a new campaign calling on the provincial government to take urgent action and pass Prompt Payment legislation right away.

“British Columbia’s construction industry can’t keep waiting for payment certainty,” says Chris Atchison, President of the BCCA. “BC is one of the last jurisdictions to advance Prompt Payment legislation. Our province depends on its construction industry to get the job done: the people who build BC deserve to be paid on time.”

The campaign calls on British Columbians to send a digital letter to their MLA, urging them to pass Prompt Payment Legislation right away. Amidst threats and tariffs from the Trump administration, the provincial government must stand in solidarity with the construction industry, businesses, and workforce by implementing measures that support the sector and remove unnecessary barriers to interprovincial trade.

“The provincial government needs to prioritize payment certainty,” emphasizes Atchison. “This legislation is already in place in most provinces. BC’s failure to implement this policy is unfairly burdening hard-working British Columbians and weakening our ability to compete nationally.”

Solving the prompt payment challenge improves cash flow for British Columbians and supports contractors in managing their staff, bills, and business without taking on extra debt and financial expenses amidst a cost-of-living crisis. The BCCA is ready and willing to work with the provincial government to get Prompt Payment legislation passed and urges anyone interested to tell their MLA: the time for payment certainty in BC is now.
