Electro-Federation Canada’s November 4 Future Forum marked the first meeting of EFC’s new Young Professionals Network (YPN). Some 60 people took part in the event.

Jason Prevost, YPN’s national president, outlined the network’s objectives. Itis designed for anyone aged 40 and under working in any capacity in the industry, and will serve as a forum to gather, grow and contribute. Through YPN activities, young members of Canada’s electrical industry will have an opportunity to create links, learn best practices, and further their careers.

Groups in regions across the country will hold their own events. Regional chairs will change annually to ensure turnover and new blood.

According to Jason Prevost, young people have much to contribute in the industry, particularly in resolving interpersonal problems for which they have special abilities. They can also help create bridges to cross the generation gap, allowing industry to better leverage multi-generational expertise.

The key takeaway is that we can work together and learn from each other. We only have to know how. Young people are encouraged to transmit their passion and their own leadership to their team.

According to participants at the YPN launch, young people appreciate this initiative and the need is real. Most of participants see the YPN as a means to gather, collaborate, adapt and evolve in the industry.

Finally, we’ve all heard the phrase: young people are our future. Jason Prevost disagrees. According to him, young people are the present.
