TD Centre Turns to Future of LED Lighting with OSRAM SYLVANIA

May 19 2016

The Toronto-Dominion Centre (TD Centre), the original skyscrapers of Toronto’s Financial District and the largest commercial complex in Canada, is working with North American lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA and Gerrie Electric, one of Canada’s largest independently owned electrical distributors, to help continue its mission of sustainability. TD Centre is replacing T8 fluorescent lighting with approximately 55,000 energy-saving and long-life SYLVANIA SubstiTUBE IPS LED Tubes, saving approximately 2,500,000 kWh annually and $250,000 per year. At 4.3 million square feet the TD Centre, managed by the Cadillac Fairview Corporation Ltd., is one of the largest LEED Platinum certified properties in North America, in addition to being one of North America’s largest business communities and home to 21,000 office employees.

The iconic TD Centre was designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. He originally envisioned the Centre as a place to live, work and play, complete with large open public spaces, restaurants, shops, services and offices all in one location. Ensuring that the TD Centre is energy-efficient, healthy and a leader in sustainability speaks to the continuation of this vision.

“TD Centre not only strives to preserve the timeless architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, but also to live up to the forward-looking design philosophy behind it by constantly evolving to meet the needs of the future,” said David Hoffman, General Manager of TD Centre. “We strongly believe that sustainability is smart business and a fundamental element that sets TD Centre apart as one of North America’s leading business communities.”

“Cadillac Fairview is always searching for opportunities to reduce energy usage and minimize our environmental footprint,” added Hoffman. “This upgrade to the most energy-efficient LED lighting delivers superior quality and significant cost savings for our tenants.”

“OSRAM SYLVANIA is committed to providing innovative lighting solutions to help businesses meet their goals,” said John Preville, CEO of OSRAM SYLVANIA LTD in Canada. “By utilizing our SYLVANIA SubstiTUBE IPS LED T8 lamps, TD Centre is not only benefiting from high quality illumination, but also continuing to be a leader in green building design.”

“Gerrie Electric, one of Canada’s largest independently owned electrical distributors, is proud to be a part of this iconic project with the support of our logistics and technical lighting specialists ensuring a smooth and efficient project, meeting all budget and time line requirements. Our record of successful implementation was one of the factors in our participation in this significant LED lighting project,” said Elaine Gerrie, Co-President and CEO, Gerrie Electric. “We are pleased to be working with such an innovative Property Manager as Cadillac Fairview and are proud to know that we helped improve the lives of the people in the TD Towers while reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint. The world class leading technology of SYLVANIA LED lighting is making an impact as improved lighting can help influence productivity and provide a pleasing work environment.”

SYLVANIA SubstiTUBE IPS LED T8 Lamps are energy-saving replacements for traditional fluorescent T8 lamps, reducing energy consumption by up to 40 percent. Suitable for dry and damp locations, these are ideal for cooler/freezer case, cove lighting, display case, parking garage, tunnels and general illumination applications. These LED T8 lamps contain no mercury, and provide instant light and a uniform light distribution. Engineered to operate on existing instant start and select programmed rapid start electronic T8 ballasts, these lamps minimize labor and recycling costs. They have a long 50,000 hour (L70) rated life, and are available in the new 4ft version, in addition to 3ft and 2ft lengths, and four color temperatures (3000K, 3500K, 4100K and 5000K). The 4ft version offers expanded choice by also being offered in two lumen packages, 2200 lumens for no light compromise and 1600 lumens for more energy savings. Because the SubstiTUBE IPS LED T8 is not affected by switching cycles, the use of occupancy or vacancy sensors can be installed with the existing instant start ballasts for optimal energy savings. The DLC listed SubstiTUBE IPS LED T8 lamps have a 6 year limited system warranty when combined with a QHE ballast (16/7 operation).
