New CABA Research on Healthy Buildings and Indoor Environmental Quality

May 3, 2023

The Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA) is releasing the results of this year’s annual landmark research project for the intelligent commercial buildings sector.

Conducted by Harbor Research and funded by CABA members, the research aims to help industry players like OEMs, control systems vendors, software and services providers, and building owners and managers make the right strategic decisions to respond to this evolving ecosystem.

Titled “Healthy Buildings and Indoor Environmental Quality,” the research report offers:

Invaluable insights on the current state of Healthy Buildings and Indoor Environmental Quality (HBIEQ) from an adoption standpoint, including key customer pain points, technical barriers, and other adoption challenges

Actionable recommendations for short and long-term strategies, technologies, and business models that are best suited to address air quality challenges and industry players’ growth in the market

“Research has clearly shown the link between indoor air quality and the health of inhabitants,” says CABA Board Chair Brian Ensign of Superior Essex Communications. “The intelligent buildings sector has a stake in creating healthy buildings not only for people’s well-being, but also to help owners and operators cost-effectively meet consumer demand, comply with evolving regulatory requirements, and respond to business needs such as reducing employee absenteeism.”

Brian Ensign, CABA Board Chair

This far-reaching research carried out between December 2022 and January 2023 included an industry content scan; in-depth executive interviews; a broad online survey that gathered information from more than 800 intelligent building owners, operators, and occupants; and a comprehensive market analysis.

“It was exciting to see such engagement, through both funding and consultation, in this collaborative research across the intelligent buildings sector,” said CABA CEO Greg Walker. “It demonstrates the real need for reliable, third-party qualitative and quantitative data to give market players a clearer understanding of the healthy buildings landscape and the opportunities driving the most value creation today and in the future.”

Greg Walker, CABA CEO

The research was funded by CABA members Belimo Americas, Broan-NuTone, Cyber Power Systems (USA), Inc., Delta Controls, A Delta Group Company, Distech Controls Inc., An Acuity Brands company, Dwyer Instruments, Inc., EBTRON, Inc., Functional Devices, Inc., Honeywell International, Inc., Johnson Controls, Inc., R-Zero Systems, Schneider Electric, Siemens Industry, Inc., Southwire Company, LLC, and Yorkland Controls Ltd.

An executive summary is available for download here. The full $130,000 (USD) research project is currently only available to the funding organizations and will be available to the public for purchase in the CABA Shop following a four-month embargo period.
