IBEW Canada’s Statement on the Federal Budget

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) International Vice-President for the First District (Canada), Russ Shewchuk issued the following statement on the Government of Canada’s 2023 Federal Budget “A Made-in-Canada Plan: Strong Middle Class, Affordable Economy, Healthy Future”:
“The IBEW’s 70,000 members in Canada strongly support the Government of Canada’s 2023 Federal Budget which delivers the tools to tackle climate change and create well-paying, high quality union jobs in Canada that can support Canadian workers and their families.”
“Today’s Budget will spur the historic clean energy investments necessary to reduce carbon emissions over the next decade with labour standards that promote family-sustaining good union jobs.”
“This Budget delivers funding to support clean energy projects that will create new good paying union jobs, lower energy costs and curb the climate crisis. The proposal also boosts renewable energy production, carbon capture and nuclear energy, which are necessary provisions for increased domestic energy security and paves our path towards Net Zero.”
“The IBEW looks forward to continuing to be at the table to work with the Government on this plan and the pending legislation to support these issues of importance to working families in every province and territory. The IBEW’s electrical training and apprenticeship programs are second-to-none, and the jobs created by this ambitious plan will help contribute to training Canada’s next generation of skilled electrical workers that will power our net-zero future.”
“We urge the Members of Parliament in the House of Commons and Senators in the upper chamber to pass this Budget, it is a win for Canadian families coping with inflation and will help tackle the climate change crisis. The members of the IBEW look forward to celebrating its passage and getting to work on the Liberal Government’s energy goals for our future that will provide good paying jobs.”
