Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Seeks New Board Member

Alberta Trades

Oct 15, 2018

The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board is looking for a new board member to represent employers in the designated trades and who will make a positive impact on the future of Alberta’s diverse skilled trades workforce. Deadline for applications: October 18.

The board was established by the Government of Alberta to work with industry partners to set standards and requirements for training and certification in the designated trades and occupations. The board also makes recommendations to the Minister of Advanced Education regarding the designation of trades and occupations, as well as the needs of Alberta’s labour market for skilled trades people.

Selection of board members is based both on the knowledge and experience of individual applicants, and on maintaining a balanced representation so that the board reflects the diversity of the apprenticeship and industry training system to the best extent possible.  An employer in industry either owns, operates or holds a management position in a business that employs journeypersons, hires and trains apprentices or has significant influence/final authority on hiring and longer term employment of journeypersons and apprentices engaged by the business.

The board is also responsible for

• making recommendations to the Minister about the designation of trades and occupations

• establishing or recognizing trade and occupation-specific committees and appointing members

• promoting careers in trades and occupations and their training and certification

• developing policies about the recognition of training

• recommending standards and requirements for training and certification in designated trades and for certification in designated occupations, and the criteria or requirements for granting and recognizing certificates

• authoring regulations regarding the description of a designated trade or occupation, standards and requirements of apprenticeship programs and the training of apprentices, and the resolution of related disagreements between employers and their employees

Any inquiries about the board or this opportunity can be made to Brian Frevel, Director, Board and Intergovernmental Connections (780-427-5811 or brian.frevel@gov.ab.ca), or Maria Morrison, Manager, Board Activities (780-422-0729 or maria.morrison@gov.ab.ca).
