Nearly 600 New Homes Proposed for Surrey

A new proposal in Surrey will bring almost 600 new homes and shelter spaces to the community through three new BC Housing-funded developments helping to support hundreds of people and families in need of affordable and supporting housing.

“People have different housing needs, and we’re working hard to help everyone find a place to live that suits them,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “With our municipal partners, we’re helping people find an affordable home near their jobs and loved ones. At the same time, we’re bringing people indoors to connect them to the supports they need to rebuild their lives.”

The Province, BC Housing and the City of Surrey are working together on the proposal, which will include a total of 590 new affordable and supportive homes, as well as complex-care housing and shelter spaces across three sites in Surrey. These three developments will increase the supply of non-market housing in Surrey, helping to ease pressure on the local rental market, while supporting stronger, healthier and more connected communities.

“Surrey is the fastest-growing city in British Columbia, and the demand for housing here is unlike anywhere else in the province,” said Brenda Locke, mayor of Surrey. “Through strong partnership with the Province, we are making progress to deliver safe, stable homes and supports our residents deserve.”

Located at 15238 19 Ave. and 1880 152 St., the proposed Semiahmoo Town Centre development is a new, mixed-use development with 260 homes – including 200 affordable rental homes, 40 supportive homes and 20 complex-care homes. This site will offer a range of housing and health supports in one location, making it easier for residents to access the services they need.

Located at 13633 Grosvenor Rd., the Surrey City Centre development being proposed includes 100 new homes, made up of 60 supportive homes and 40 shelter spaces. This development is intended to address the need for additional emergency shelter and supportive housing, providing people experiencing homelessness with safe indoor spaces and access to critical supports. The City of Surrey has contributed the land for this project, underscoring its commitment to delivering housing solutions that meet the urgent needs of the community.

Located at 13216 104 Ave., the proposed Mayflower Housing Co-operative development includes 230 new affordable rental homes. These homes would provide long-term, stable housing for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes, contributing to a more inclusive and affordable housing market in Surrey.

All of the proposed developments require rezoning through the City of Surrey. BC Housing and project partners will share detailed information and provide opportunities for community feedback on the Semiahmoo Town Centre and Surrey City Centre projects throughout the development process.

If approved by the City of Surrey, further details around total funding for the three proposed developments will be available closer to groundbreaking.

This investment is part of the Province’s broader $19-billion housing commitment and is contingent on successful development approval. Since 2017, the B.C. government has delivered or is underway with more than 93,600 homes throughout the province, including more than 2,000 homes in Surrey.
