Pilot Project in Chilliwack Promotes Skilled Trades to Elementary Students

May 12, 2025

The British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA), in collaboration with the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, is proud to announce the launch of the pilot phase of the Honour the Work initiative this May. This innovative program aims to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education through hands-on activity kits and books designed to inspire elementary school students.

The Honour the Work initiative is dedicated to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among young learners. The comprehensive kits provided include detailed guides for educators, complete with lesson plans, instructional videos, and various resources, all aligned with the British Columbia curriculum standards.

The initial pilot of the Honour the Work initiative will be conducted in School District 33 in Chilliwack, with the goal to expand to additional school districts in the next school year. Part of this expansion will be supported through an industry fundraising drive, with a goal to raise $550,000 which will help supply 500 classrooms and over 21,000 students with access to the Honour the Work curriculum. The program aspires to encourage future generations to consider careers in the construction trades.

“We are thrilled to launch the Honour the Work program, which we believe will make a significant impact on students’ education and career aspirations. By exposing students to the exciting possibilities within the construction industry, we are not only supporting their educational journey but also contributing to the growth and sustainability of our industry,” commented Chris Atchison, President of the BCCA.
