Course Information

From equipment selection to wiring methods and installation requirements, the safe installation of electrical equipment in hazardous locations relies on rigorous attention to detail. This course will provide a foundation of knowledge to help operations, maintenance, safety, electrical professionals and other stakeholders to systematically apply the requirements for installing and maintaining electrical equipment in hazardous locations. It provides a complete review of requirements based on the zone and division systems of classification for explosive gas and dust atmospheres.

Participants will carefully examine the installation requirements based on applicable Codes, standards and best practices, and will gain an understanding of the differences between the CEC and NEC Codes with respect to the Zone and Division systems of classification, Hazloc product markings, and equipment construction and performance requirements. In addition, participants will analyze installations to determine the wiring methods and equipment selection. This course covers both the installation and maintenance in Hazardous areas as well as product Certification requirements.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you will be able to:

  • Define terminology and fundamentals specific to hazardous locations including the properties of an explosive atmosphere
  • Explain how the Zone and Division Systems are used for the classification of hazardous areas
  • Explain how safety, cost and a teamwork process all factor into a hazardous location study
  • Apply Canadian Electrical Code (CE Code) rules to equipment requirements, wiring methods and seals in both Division and Zone hazardous locations
  • Describe protection methods for hazardous areas classified by the presence of flammable substances
  • Explain combustible gas detection in installations incorporating combustible gas detection.
  • Identify and interpret the rules concerning common flammable gas sites
  • Describe the rules concerning hazardous environments in sewage lift and treatment plants
  • Differentiate between the different certification system and markings used in North America and internationally
