Toshiba 5000 Series NEMA 3R UPS Becomes First True Purpose-Built Outdoor UPS

Toshiba International Corporation (TIC) has successfully secured a patent (10,143,116) for the design of the Power Electronic Department’s 5000 Series N3R Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) and in doing so have become the first UPS manufacturer to have a true outdoor rated UPS. TIC has achieved this feat by using a familiar NEMA 3R rated enclosure and by re-engineering the layout of the UPS components to bolster better airflow and ease of maintenance.

The N3R UPS can reliably operate in temperatures ranging from -10°C to 50°C without additional cooling or heating equipment. The N3R solution is designed for 208/120V and 480V three-phase input /output applications with a 288Vdc nominal battery link. These UPSs range from 15kVA to 30kVA with larger models available in 2020. They are now available with high temperature pure lead batteries and in the very near future with Toshiba’s SCiB Lithium-ion battery offering in NEMA 3R rated enclosures so that the entire system can withstand harsh weather and other physical elements they might encounter in the chemical processing, mining, oil exploration, waste water treatment, pulp and paper, manufacturing, and heavy transportation control industries.

The Toshiba 5000 Series N3R features state-of-the-art insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology and incorporates capacitors and components designed for a 20-year life span for worry free dependability. The mechanical design of the 5000 Series N3R allows for easy installation, total front access for easy routine maintenance and a wide operating temperature range without the need for an AC unit.
