Eaton Extends its Supercapacitor Module Offering with Increased Voltage for Rugged Environments

EIN Eaton XLR 400

Oct 15, 2019

Eaton announced its latest release of the XLR-51 supercapacitor module. The latest design extends the XLR module family to 51.3 volts (V) and 188 farads (F) and is ideal for rugged applications with harsh environments such as transportation, marine, grid storage and material handling.

The XLR Supercapacitor modules provide efficient energy storage for high power, high charge/discharge and peak power shaving applications and improves power quality for voltage spikes and brown outs for backup power applications. Each module includes an integrated cell voltage management circuitry, an overvoltage alarm and a temperature output.

The XLR modules achieved UN-ECE Reg. 10 & Reg. 100 certifications on the 48 and 51 volt modules. The scope of these standards governs provisions for wheeled vehicle electromagnetic compatibility for Reg. 10 and specific environmental requirements for integration into electric power trains (i.e. electric vehicles) for Reg. 100.  Eaton’s supercapacitor modules are RoHS compliant and require no external battery management system (BMS) due to Eaton’s cell balancing technology.

With up to a 20-year lifespan, XLR modules can increase the life of primary transportation energy storage system by reducing the need for replacement parts and batteries. The XLR supercapacitor modules are a self-contained energy storage device comprised of eighteen individual XL60 supercapacitor cells.
